The Great American Trailer Park Musical: A reality show at its finest!

REVIEW
By Andrea Nicholson

WICHITA - The Cabaret Oldtown show was advertised for mature audiences only, and for good reason. The F-bomb was dropped more than once, and the sexual innuendos were definitely present. To have it any other way, though, would’ve been a disservice to the theatre’s most recent offering The Great American Trailer Park Musical.greatamericantrailerpark

For example, our table’s favorite line was, “Rendezvous – that’s French for fu@%in’!” You just can’t PG that up and make it nearly as funny! Other favorites include: “There was a time when a series of sexual favors meant something to the Governor” and “Oh my gay hell!”

There was no doubt where we were once the opening song, This Side of the Tracks began. The setting was a trailer park in Florida called Armadillo Acres. Betty (Angela Geer) is the manager of the park. She is absolutely hilarious and the most believable in her character with a strong voice that carried throughout the theater.

Lin (Teri Adams) spends her days trying to keep the electricity on so the local prison doesn’t have enough “juice” to extinguish her husband in the electric chair. Lin is not afraid to tell it like it is which results in some hilarious moments for the crowd.

Norbert (Dennis Arnold) and Jeannie (Cianna Atchison-Guillen) are soon to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary – but first they have some major obstacles they must overcome.

Pickles (Kaye Brownlee) is a 17-year old who is burdened with “hysterical pregnancy.” She is a young, naïve blonde who couldn’t help but make you laugh.

And finally we have Pippi (Christi Moore, the producer of the show) and Duke (Nick Probst). Pippi, a “young, purdy and flexible” stripper, is on the run from Duke, the bad-boy boyfriend from Oklahoma City. They bring action to Armadillo Acres as well as lots of laughs.

Trailer Park had great music with songs like Roadkill, Make like a Nail and Press On and a touching ballad involving toilet brushes. Cabaret Oldtown is the only theater in Wichita that has a live band year round, and the band is an excellent asset to the show.

Even if you “don’t like musicals” you will love the honest hilarity of the Great American Trailer Park Musical and you’ll probably want to see it again. The show runs until Sept. 25; call 316-265-4400 for reservations. You can bet I will be back in the seats before it’s over!
